This small paperback book contains photographic plates from a number of images in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum by Paul Strand, a major figure in 20th century photography. Images range from 1913 to 1954, and detailed notes are provided to provide context for each image.
An introduction by curator Anne M. Lyden provides a biographical introduction to Mr. Strand and his career in photography Following the images, there’s an extensive discussion by Lyden and a number of other scholars of his work that makes fascinating reading for those wanting to know more about Strand and his place in the photographic pantheon.
Due to the format of the book, the photographs are small, around 4 by 5 inches, but the printing quality is excellent and the volume does justice to Mr. Strand’s work.
I recommend this for anybody interested in the history and development of photography during the 20th century, and to fans of Paul Strand’s excellent black and white body of work.
My copy of this book was published in 2005 by Getty Publications.
